Drapery Accessories Common Types & Usage
As if you don't have enough to decide about your
window treatments
; along comes drapery accessories to be mixed in the pot of confusing terminology! Whew! Makes you want to just back-burner the whole idea for awhile, doesn't it? Well, have no fear! Let's get through some basics to help you relax and not be so stressed about this! My main goal at the end of this subject is to get you to relax and have some fun with your choices of drapery accessories, because decorating your home should be a pleasure for you, not drudgery!
So pour yourself a glass of wine (it's 5:00 somewhere, right?) and let's tackle this together. Here are some of the most common styles and uses of drapery accessories like drapery trim, drapery cord, and other sewing embellishments. I am not going to throw these at you in any structured format to confuse you even further. I will attempt to make it easier than that with a visual picture that will be far more memorable than more words floating around in your head to remember.
Drapery Tassel Fringe
Here is a common
roller shade
usually ordered plain and seldom with an additional
valance
over the top. I know you have seen the look before; but look what a simple drapery accessory tassel fringe can do for dressing up this otherwise possibly boring roller shade? The contrast of the drapery fringe against the neutral shade makes a sophisticated statement about this window, doesn't it? Sometimes it is complemented with other types of
drapery trim
or even the same monochromatic tones with more subtle qualities. However, in this nook setting with the wrought iron bakers rack and the dark artifacts therein, this
shade
makes just the right choice for this decor. It is really a matter of balance - and this does! But the most important question to ask yourself; is it for you?
Simple Bullion Drapery Trim
Sometimes fabric makes the statement you are looking for and that's a time to be cautious about the style of
drapery accessories
you use, if any. In this picture a simple drapery bullion and cord trim on the pillows is just the right touch to add drama and accentuate the palm tree pattern on the fabric. The color of the trims are quiet and subtle in their use. The choice to be understated yet achieve a "finished" look.
Drapery Bullion Fringe & Drapery Tassel Fringe
This is an interesting concept of mixing drapery accessories to achieve a formal layered look. The underneath large
swags
are bordered with long drapery bullion while the front smaller swags have been adorned with drapery tassel fringe, and also used on the
cascades
trailing down the sides of the
formal drapes
. Difficult to see in this picture, the front swags are also separated by large single tassels.
Gimp & Beaded Drapery Fringe
This picture depicts a simple
woven window shade
with a curved valance that has been dressed up with a row of drapery gimp and bead trim.
We have taken a hard treatment of woven wood and softened the feel giving it a bit of a feminine touch while keeping it simple and stylish. The softness of the green color gives a contrast of delicate proportions yet contrast is very clear to determine from across the room.
Bead Trim & Matching Cord Trim
Here is another example of how subtle and soft drapery bead trim can bring to this bedding ensemble in it's soft blue color and delicate silk fabrics. The beaded trim on the envelope pillow steals the show in this bedding group but completely complementing of the neck roll with it's delicious cord trim. Elegant, subtle, and very inviting; isn't it?
Large Drapery Tassels
And then there are times when nothing but large drapery tasselsare needed. This is one of those times.
This treatment has the class and sophistication all by itself and the only thing needed to say "I am custom, I am classy, and I am complete" are these large tassels hanging from each side of the
decorative drapery rod
. This over the pole open swag with cascade and panel in monochromatic color to match the walls makes this an inviting and elegant room.
Contrast Tassel Fringe
This
designer window treatment
is featured with the same contrasting tassel fringe overall. The
over the pole swags
, long self-lined
cascades
, and contour drapery tie backs are all trimmed with the same tassel fringe. This completes the look of contrast in this room with the underlying
banded roman shade
of reverse color appointment.
Without the decorative tassel fringe, this window would become plain and void of a true contrast except for the roman shade. Here the drapery fringe completed and enhanced a look of high style and sophistication.
These photos depict the "ordinary" use of drapery trim.
