Decorating On A Dime With Window Valance Ideas and Holiday Themes
Now you can be decorating on a dime with window valance ideas and other areas of your home. It's true! I'll tell you how you can decorate your windows for the holidays - ANY holiday, not just Christmas - with special ideas of making valances and other things with very little financial outlay.
It's simple and inexpensive to turn simple common things into original works of art that everyone will enjoy.
First and foremost, I want you to have fun with these projects. They should not be labor intensive. We DO want to keep our humor during this time, okay? We'll start with some basic window treatment decorating ideas. Specifically, window valance ideas for our first project.
These particular window treatment valances are fun, and you can get the entire family into the act and make it a group project. When you are decorating on a dime, there are no screw drivers, drills, hammer, or nails needed. What you will need is a few packages or a roll of velcro, some spray glue or good ol' Elmers will do, unless you can get your hands on some good fabric glue.
This project works best if you start with an existing subtle style drapery and styled in a simple, quiet pattern, or no pattern at all. Perhaps you have just a little texture and kept the theme neutral; then you have opened a world of magic for your holiday decorating.
Imaginations can run wild here, and with a little practice, you can master decorating on a dime.
However, even if you DO have a bold pattern, or multi-coloreddrapery, you can still do these ideas, you just have to choose your medium in a more subtle or solid pattern to blend and balance well. So let's get going because I am sure you did not stop by here to hear me ramble. You want to know how to make a valance for special holidays while decorating on a dime, right?
You will probably need some ribbons, glitter, a few "artsy" pieces like Christmas bulbs and ornaments, specialty specific holiday "props" like Angels, Snowmen, Easter bunnies, Halloween pieces, perhaps some wrapping paper, tassels and cording, colorful beads and shiny "bling" things, some greenery, perhaps a few flowers, some paints, colored chalk, colored felt tip markers, or pens of liquid embroidery work well, and maybe a stencil or two or even some paper doilies to use in place of stencil.
Add a very vivid imagination and splash on some ingenuity and a smile. Ready?
You will need some fabric. However, the easiest thing to do is buy a dozen or so of solid colored large napkins, and if you have simple plain fabric drapes or window coverings, you can go for the prints. Both are acceptable for this job.
Or you can use remnant fabric pieces that are stitched together and hemmed. This is a little more work, but more customized when finished. Or just use fabric that will not fray on the edges when cut. Or, on the other hand, fraying can be very pretty if done right, too. It's your choice.
Knot the napkins somewhere toward a corner and flair the large part out to fan the napkin. Or use a fancy napkin ring and addsome 'bling' to it like decorative gift wrap and ribbon. You may want to add a name or a slogan with your paints and start decorating around it, like drawing or stencil in the corners, spray paint over the paper doilies for a different effect.
Holiday Decorating on a Dime - Christmas and Holiday Ornaments - Valance Ideas
This might be a good time for some holiday music, hot chocolate, and those special chocolate chip cookies, too. Add some shiny beads to your work, a flower, some greenery, an ornament, and set aside to dry while working on another one. You will need one pair for each window you are decorating. There is nothing that says they have to be exactly alike - unless you are a symmetrical person who can't deal with things out of balance.
When they are dry, attach to each side of your drapery at the top with a piece of velcro. You can hide a small piece of velcro just about anywhere; on the curtain rod or even on the bracket that holds the rod. Depending on how high and how large your windows are, you may want to use two of your designs on each side.
While there are many, many styles and types of discount window treatments to choose from,
Decorating On A Dime is intended only for holiday decor that is specific to YOUR designs and finished products. There are no window valance patterns, and there are no pictures here purposely.
This should be a family project and the finished product is an original work of art for YOUR family. If you copy mine then it's not original any longer. I'll supply you with the valance ideas, the creativity is exclusively yours.
There is no right and wrong - there is only limitations in what you can imagine.
Be brave. Have fun! Let your mind play a little. There are so many holiday themes. Just pick one and run with it. Even if you make a mistake, that's okay because you are decorating on a dime!
Be proud of the finish. Give all you have to the moment. You might create your own free holiday wallpapers, who knows! Just be creative and energy driven. Perhaps you will enjoy it so much you will want to create your own unique Christmas stockings, too! The cost is minimal and your investment of time is far more valuable than the few holiday decorations used.
You can make beautifully colored scarves for your windows
by layering your favorite color fabric with gold or silver lace or sheer fabric, or any see through fabrics over a brightly colored piece of fabric leaving the bottom two or three inches exposed with just the underneath fabric. Tie off the ends leaving 'tails' to hang on each side and dress with matching rope and tassels. This is a classic look and won't break your budget because you are decorating on a dime.
Or you can simply tie several ends to a dressy cord and have one in the middle and one on each end loosely swagged over your drapery panels, blinds or other window coverings; or overlap them for a layered look.
These scarves can be decorated much like the napkins above before hanging. It's all about feeling. This project is supposed to make you feel good and have some fun while you do your decorating on a dime and create your own window treatment decorating ideas.
Adorn the scarf with ribbon, greenery, sparkles, and even a small replica of the specific holiday emblem; like a poinsettia, a bunny for Easter, an elf for Christmas, a witch for Halloween, or some brightly colored ornaments. If the "characters" are larger, you might place the scarf then set the characters at the ends of the rod on one side or the other with legs overhanging onto the scarf. The only rule, strive for balance in the room.
This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to decorating on a dime.
Mother Nature provides so much beauty for us to enhance and use as decor in our homes. A little ingenuity, a little creativity, some patience and diligence; and you can create your own master pieces year after year of original family decor that is both timeless and precious.
